It is a condition of the laser operator’s licence that they must follow the advice of a knowledgeable medical practitioner to avoid possible adverse health outcomes. This medical practitioner must also be supervising the progress of your service.

  • Make sure that you discuss the laser service with your own medical practitioner, or the medical practitioner that is associated with the tattoo removal business, before you commence a course of tattoo removal service.
  • Make sure the operator explains the effects of the laser on your skin while the service progresses over time. If the results differ from what is described, you should consult the cosmetic business and, if any injury or infection, your medical practitioner.

Due Diligence For Laser Tattoo Removal

Each state sets its own regulations for laser tattoo removal who can fire a laser, who can delegate the procedure, and who can own the laser device. It is usually the respective states medical or licensing board that puts forth the ruling.

Weve compiled a document that hosts the contact information for the relevant governing body in each state. When contacting the respective agency, please keep a few of these tips in mind:

  • Many states have no or poorly understood regulation for the removal of tattoos with a laser device, therefore no information exists. The receptionists that answer the phone will generally say “no” to your question, even if they have no idea what you are talking about.
  • The tattoo removal procedure and technology is often confused with other more widely known procedures, such as hair removal.
  • State board employees have claimed that local governments set the regulations for tattoo removal when they cannot quickly and clearly locate the proper information.
  • Misinformation about laser tattoo removal regulations has been given out by state agencies under the assumption that removing a tattoo is similar to that of hair. Its not!

Who Can Remove A Tattoo In Illinois

Who can Remove a Tattoo in Illinois?

There are times when having a tattoo is no longer desirable. Under Illinois law, the body artist who applied the tattoo cannot remove it.

While some tattoos are removed for cosmetic reasons or personal reasons, tattoo removal can dramatically change lives. A study conducted at West Virginia University found that ex-offenders without tattoos were able to avoid re-incarceration for an average of almost 3 1/2 years longer than ex-offenders with tattoos.

In Illinois, the only way to have a tattoo removed is by a licensed physician. The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation requires that anyone seeking a symbol removed must be examined by a physician who will determine the safest way to proceed.

Generally, tattoo removal lasers work by using high-intensity light. The light breaks down the ink, which is then dissolved and removed through the bodys immune system. Black ink is the easiest to remove since it absorbs more light than lighter color ink which may require other techniques. Light blue ink cannot be removed with a laser, and another treatment will be necessary. Green and yellow ink is also very difficult to remove and may require several procedures.

Tattoo Licensing And Regulation

While there is no federal law in the United States regulating the practice of tattooing, nearly every state has its own statutory tattooing laws or regulations. However, these vary widely. Some states require individual tattoo artists to obtain a permit from their department of public health. In others, such as Maryland, a license is not required, but tattoo artists must comply with all relevant health code regulations.

In some states, local health boards may establish their own licensing and regulatory schemes in lieu of the state departments. For example, Nevada state law does not regulate tattoos, but regional health districts may govern the practice. In many states, tattooists have to satisfy certain training requirements and be registered. In a few states, such as Arizona, there are no health regulations at all for tattoo shops.

Many states prohibit minors from getting tattoos and require parental consent or parents to be present during the procedure. When it comes to laws that regulate tattooing from home, the picture is less clear.

Tattooing From Home Laws

While in-home tattoo artists probably exist all over the country, that doesn’t necessarily mean they are legal. Although many of the regulations may not directly address in-home tattoo artists, it’s probably unlikely that your home environment would pass health and safety tests. Tattooing involves dealing with blood and bodily fluids and breaking the skin, and the risk of spreading blood-borne illnesses such as hepatitis, MRSA and HIV are higher if the environment is not sterile.

To accurately answer the question, “Do you need a license to tattoo from home?” you need to contact your state’s department of public health. It will be able to direct you to relevant tattooing laws. Again, some states are stricter than others. In Connecticut, for example, you cannot legally work as a tattooist unless you have completed 2,000 hours of practical training and experience under the personal supervision and instruction of a tattoo technician.
